Jerry Grissom was born in Jackson, TN. He studied painting at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and earned a BFA in Environmental Design and Lighting from Parsons School of Design and New School University in 1979. Grissom was awarded a summer internship to study lighting at the Metropolitan Museum's installation of the American Wing under LeMar Terry.
